Blog 20 - Wednesday, November 29, 2017

Your BLOG topic is FREE CHOICE!  You could blog about whatever it is you want, except what you've already blogged about!  You could go on a rant or you could simply blog about something important to you.

Be creative and write about something you feel important or something you would like to tell your audience. Write about something you are passionate about.

You must remember your audience.  It is not simply me (Mr. Katz) reading this blog!
If you will be ranting about a certain individual, you need to leave their name out of this.  You could give them a pseudonym (example: Mr. Ed) or simply leave their name as anonymous.
Make sure your language is appropriate.  Do not go on swearing tangents.

  1. As some people may already know, I play waterpolo. I love the sport. It isn't as popular in the sporting world, but that is a reason as to why I love it. The goal of the game is to score the ball in the opposing teams net, kind of like handball, but way more difficult. It isn't as simple as you may think because wrestling is allowed and holding and grabbing is always happening. You are basically allowed to be drowning the person, to some extent. The reason why this sport isn't for every one is because you must be able to swim, tread, and shoot and pass the ball all without ever touching the bottom of the pool. Usually this rule doesn't apply because the game is played in the deep end, but if there happens to have a shallow end you are not allowed to touch the bottom. I only started playing the game seriously two summers ago where I was introduced to it and decided to join the winter team for DDO where it goes to a serious level. It is now my second year and I am playing in the U-16 category in which I play on the A team (the better team) and I am very proud of that. I believe I could go far with this sport because of the better chances then with other sports. I will have to work and play hard but I am willing to that way I could go as far as possible.

  2. Now this is a dream come true. I will be talking about the Roman Republic and its biggest struggles. Now if you don't already know, the Roman republic's capitol was Rome an the Republic reigned for about 500 years before it became an empire. It was present between the years 500b.c. to 20b.c. The biggest struggle of the Republic was the Phoenician state Carthage. The capitol of Carthage was Carthage which was located near modern day Tunisia. There were 3 wars between Carthage and Rome which are now known as the Punic wars. The most famous one was the second and this war was the most devastating for Rome. There's some accounts of how Rome lost 20% of it's male population in this 20 war. In the end Rome won all of these wars and destroying Carthage. 150 years later, Julius Caesar entered the scene and he detested the way Rome was governed. He disobeyed commands of the court and he even started the destruction of the Republic. His adoptive son Octavian(who would rename himself Augustus) would finish this destruction and become the first Roman Emperor. Just to be clear I'm oversimplifying this a lot. If I were to describe everything that the Republic had problem's had I would need more than 3 blogs to do this. I haven't even talked about Hannibal and him crossing the freaking alps with freaking elephants, Scipio, Macedonia, Seleucids, Hamilcar. Crassus. Pompey (the person), Egypt, Marc Anthony, Lepidus, the first and second triumvirate, Hanno, Vercingetorix, Ariovistus, the Iceni, the parthians, Cleopatra, Milo, Clodius, Cicero, the other Cicero, Fabian and more. So in conclusion, the Roman Republic was a pretty crappy system which had more trouble in the senate room than on the Roman frontiers. Hope I taught you something:) (BTW things don't go to well after Augustus dies)

  5. I am going to write my blog about my life choices in the health and fitness industry. I started working out when I was in the sixth grade because of one of my friends who told me I could get a pass at the YMCA. At that point I have wanted to start working out and getting in shape for a while, but I did not know how. I used to be a fat boy and so I was ashamed in my body, you have probably heard this story before so I'm not going to say it again. Fast forward 2 years, I started learning about nutrition and dieting. I started eating better and working out better, now I am in better shape than I ever was. I still feel that I have not reached my goal which is why I am going on a bulk, which is where I go in calorie surplus where I eat a lot more and workout more, I will be putting on muscle but also fat, therefore I will be round faced again. When the snow melts I'm going to go on a cut and lose all that body fat and then yeah, be ripped. That's my story

  6. I’m going to write about synchronized swimming, and how wrong some people are when they say that it is easy, or not a sport at all. It takes a lot of strength to be good at it, and you need to be really good with others and working on a team. It takes over 10 hours of practice a week to have a good routine for the year, and to gain enough stamina to be able to do it. You need to be able to hold your breath for over a minute. You also need to support your whole body weight on top of the water using just your arms. It looks easy, but that is just because synchronized swimmers practice for years to get good enough to make it look that way.

  7. I’m going to blog about something that I have been looking forward to for months now. A while ago my family decided that we should go on vacation. Therefore, during March break we decided to book a cruise! Since I was so excited and eager I was the one who searched for cruises on the computer for hours. Finally, we found a cruise that we wanted to go on and we booked it! The cruise is from December 30th until January 6th. It leaves from Puerto Rico and stops at a bunch of ports in the Caribbean. I’m beyond excited because after celebrating Christmas (my favorite holiday) we get to leave on a cruise!!!!!! I have been waiting 9 months for this and now it’s 29 days away!!!

  8. For this blog, something I would like to talk about my trip to Alberta in 2016 because I still think about it every day. We did so many cool things, but this trip is the one that opened my eyes to the experiences travelling could give me. I want to talk about one experience in particular, when we went to Banff. So me and my friends arrived in Banff at 6 am on my birthday, after bussing since 4 am from Jasper. I was not only excited for the place but also to spend time with my friends. Firstly, we went to a grizzly bear sanctuary not far from Banff, which is one of my favourite animals. We met several guides who pointed us how to spot bear tracks and the entire thing was not only educational but fun. Next, we went back into town for some dinner and shopping. We had the next 4 hours to ourselves without adults and my friends Emily, Virginie and Julie and I went exploring. My friends all pitched in to buy me dinner. By dinner, I mean a sandwich and secret menu Frap from Starbucks. We explored the town into the night and shared lots of laughs. This is one of the best memories I've ever had and I simply remember feeling extremely worry-free and blissful.

  9. i'm gonna talk about cool cars. i really like fast cars that make a nice sound like a "vroom" :). i'll name a few cars i really like, toyota supra tt, saleen s7, nissan gtr ams package. many would argue that electric cars are better and stuff but i don't find so. first of there's no gears or sound to go through, i mean the tesla model auto pilot thing, you're not even driving anymore. also, the amount of electric station to recharge is rare and it takes a long time unlike a petrol car, within a few minutes your refilled.

  10. for my blog im going to be talking about the Mandela effect. The Mandela Effect is a huge gap or misremembering of a fact or event. Lots of theories have been put out there to explain what causes it, some more realistic than others.
Many people think the Queen song 'We Are the Champions' ends with the phrase, "We are the champions..... of the world." However, it may shock you to know that there is no 'of the world' at the end. also,a famous line delivered during 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.' You could probably finish it on command if asked. "mirror mirror on the wall" But what if I told you that the line is actually, "Magic mirror on the wall?" Good luck trying to find evidence of it being different.

  12. Since this is a free blog, I have decided to write about the ringette tournament that I am at. The ringette tournament is in Mississauga which is about 6 hours away. I love long road trips so the drive was fun! It took us 7 hours because of all the traffic and construction. I really enjoy playing in tournaments because the vibe of our team is always different and of course you want to win! I am especially excited for this tournament because we are playing against teams that we’ve never played against before like Mississauga, Calgary, Manitoba and Richmond Hill. We played our first game this morning against Mississauga and we lost 5-1. I hope that my team plays well in our next games and that we bring home the gold!

  14. This may seem a little tacky, but since the holidays are coming up, I really just wanted to talk about how happy I am to be Jewish, even if Chanukah isn't a High Holiday. If you didn't already know, I'm super proud to be Jewish. Every day, I wear a necklace to show that. The Jewish community is so much fun, and everybody is super nice. There is a lot of discrimination towards my religion. I may not take immediate offence, but it bothers me in a way where I love the Jewish community and hate to see my community treated like that. My family isn’t a particularly religious family, since our Synagogue is all the way in Cote Saint-Luc, and we don’t completely follow the eating rules, we try our best. What I love so much about my religion is you aren’t praised for following the rules, you are praised for trying your best. Whether you follow the rules doesn’t change the way people in the religion treat you. My family only goes to Synagogue 3 days a year - and we don’t even stay the whole time. Even so, whenever I go, I feel as if I had been going there everyday. The Rabbi knows my name, talks to me, and even gives me the unbelievable honor of carrying the small (big one is too heavy :P) Torah around the Synagogue. Everyone comes and kisses it to show gratitude, to show how much they love the Jewish religion. If you didn’t know, the Torah is our sacred book, like the Bible in Christianity. After, I go back to up to the ark and put it away. Even if I’m not always there, I feel super included. The Jewish people are generous, totally proving the stereotype wrong. We are super inclusive. Two years ago, someone anonymously donated enough money to my Synagogue to give every kid that was having a Bar or Bat Mitzvah on the Sundays of that year an amazing trip to Israel, and I was lucky to be a part of them! The trip is to this day one of the best, if not the best trip I’ve ever been on. I am super grateful for going on that trip. I made amazing friends and even got to know the Rabbi better. We had an amazing tour guide who later turned into a friend. Our security guard was super social. He helped my grandmother get around after our little wave falling incident. He was part of the top 20 out of 2000 candidates for joining the Jewish FBI or whatever it was called. I am super grateful to him as he helped my grandmother have a great trip even if she had hurt her leg. The Rabbi at my Synagogue is great. Not only does his give me honors in which they make me feel super special, but he is also super nice. He cares about every single person in the Synagogue, and even seems to know everybody. When my grandfather passed away, our Rabbi was just as devastated as everyone else. He had created a connection with him, and that means alot to me. He went through the hassle of converting me to an Orthodox Jew, since no other Synagogue wanted to give me a Bar Mitzvah, since I was born Reform. He was so happy to include me into his congregation, and it made me so happy. He loves his religion so much that he couldn’t have just seen me not have a Bar Mitzvah. All that to say, I love my religion, everything about it. Mr. Katz, if you’ve gotten this far, here’s a blog topic for you: why do you love the Jewish religion, and if you don’t, why not? Was just feeling a bit curious.

  15. For this blog, I want to talk about my favorite movie of all time. A lot of you may not have heard of it but it's called the Shawshank Redemption. It's really old, it came out in 1994. I knew that it had a reputation for being one of the best movies of all time so I checked it out on Netflix. The movie is about this man named, Andy Dufresne who's been arrested for supposedly "killing" his wife because she was with another man. He got sent two lifetimes in prison. The prison was called Shawshank and it was full of a lot of people. There was red(voiced by Morgan Freeman) who was this dude who went to prison for murder and Brooks who was an old man who was the librarian. This movie was set in the 1940s where the guards were all evil and corrupt. On the first day Andy was sent to prison there was a fat guy who was also there. At night he started crying saying that he didn't deserve to be here so the guards shut him up by beating him up. The next morning you find him dead because the doctor went home that night. That really got me off guard and got me hooked on the movie. Another interesting story in the movie was about the Character brooks. He was the old librarian who was going to finally be sent free. He didn't want to be sent free so he tried to slit someone's throat. That tells you something and this quote from the movie explains it "These walls are funny. First, you hate them, then you get used to them. Enough time passes, you get so you depend on them." Andy convinced him not to kill him and he was sent free. Brooks came to the prison in 1909 and left in 1954. In prison, you have no concept of the outside world so Never knew about cars or anything so when he came out he had no idea what was going on. He always thought of ways to get out of prison but he ended up living until he wrote a letter to andy telling everyone that he will end his life. So In conclusion, This is my favorite movie of all time because I love the characters the atmosphere and the dialogue, I encourage others to watch this movie as well

  16. I'm going to blog about something really annoying in my life, though it may not seem like it. that something is my two dogs. They may seem nice calm and cuddly. but in reality, they much prefer to run everything I own. I'm not kidding you can ask any of my friends. I'm always complaining about run socks, shirts, and what ever else clothing wise you can think of. Its always so nice to come home to another run thing. also, this may sound cheesy but they've actually eaten homework, no joke a few weeks ago my one dog, Max was eating my math. even worse he was sitting in my desk chair with his front paws on my desk holding his snack. I could ramble on about my dogs and all the annoying stuff they do but then this would be a few hundred more words so I'll stop.

  17. There was once a time I made the slide at our swimming school disappear. When I was a kid, me and my friends will go up the slide and slide down. But the one day, I slipped on one of the steps and my chin banged on each step. My chin split open and there was this big gash. I was later moved to the hospital to stitch my chin. I remembered that the doctor also put a needle in my injury and injected some kind of fluid, I don't know what kind of fluid. When I got better and came back to the pool, the slide was removed, I guess for safety purpose. A thing to mention is that you cana actually still feel a bit my stitch.

  19. As a lot of people know I love to play soccer. It is my favourite sport and I just love it so much. I have been playing soccer for 11 years and I have always loved the sport so much. One thing I love about soccer is that you grow up with your team, every year a lot of the same girls stay together. This didn't happen with me though because my old team folded but before that happened I had been with those girls for many years and had such a great bond with all of them. Even the girls I'm with now I was able to create a bond with them and they're really fun girls. For me, no other sport is as fun as soccer is. It is probably because I have been doing t for so long and improving every year that I am now very good at this sport and when you know the sport very well it is so much fun.

  20. for my free choice i have decided to blog about the school system. i think that with the changing world some classes should be replaced with others or new criteria should be involved. with all the new technology that is being developed the world is not the same as it used to be so i think we should learn more about technology or things related to it. for example we should definitely have a coding class because when we are adults we will need coding to find a job.

  21. For this weeks blog, i will talk about avocados. Avocados are my favorite and they are very delicious. Avocados are also a very interesting fruit to learn about. The most popular type of avocado is a Hass avocado, which is grown on a Hass tree. Not everyone knows but avocados have the highest fiber content of any fruit. They also contain vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin E, potassium, magnesium, and folate. And a fun fact about guacamole (which is made from avocados) the origin of the word comes from Spanish explorers who couldnt say the Aztec word for avocado which is “ahuacatl,” so they called avocado “aguacate”.

  22. Solely because Mr. Katz asked me to, I'll be writing a short, honest paragraph about why I wear my cross necklace. Last year I used to have 2 wooden crosses, but my older brother disliked them so when my family and I left for California this summer, my brother surprised me by purchasing this necklace from China. Since I'm also Christian, it only seem appropriate to wear it every day, and everywhere.

  23. For my free blog topic, I'm going to address conspiracy theories; two in particular. I've seen a lot of ridiculous ideas people believe in from Beyonce faking her pregnancy to the moon being a hologram. What I a, trying to address today is not nessecairly a conspiracy theory but it is something I find weird. It is called the mandela effect. It is what the internet is calling those curious instances in which many of us are certain we remember something a particular way, but it turns out we’re incorrect. I quote from buzzfeed: “The name of the theory comes from many people feeling certain they could remember Nelson Mandela dying while he was still in prison back in the ’80s. Contrary to what many thought, Mandela’s actual death was on Dec. 5, 2013, despite some people claiming to remember seeing clips of his funeral on TV.” I find this mind boggling. There are so many other examples like: don’t you remember the quote in snow white being “Mirror mirror on the wall?” well, it’s not! It never was! The real quote is “Magic mirror on the wall.”

I don't think I'd want to play in the world championships, but this game really made me feel proud about the sport I play and made me love it even more. Ringette is an exceptional sport, and it has definitely shaped me into the person I am today.

  25. Lets talk about pears. Pears are great, shout out to all the pears out there just being amazing and delicious. Pears make you happy, pears make you cry, no matter how many you eat, pears will never die. The only competition the pear has is the plum. The plum is good but it is not comparable to the pear, what I just wrote is contradictory. This whole thing makes no sense but it is worth the work because it is for the pears. Lets take a moment of silence for the pears and just imagine how good they taste. Apparently if you mix pears with chocolate, you have one hell of a dessert.Pears are good, pears are great, throw some chocolate into the mix and you've got one hell of a plate. Did someone say that pears are nasty, no, obviously because pears aren't salty. Ye.
