Blog 16 - Monday, November 13, 2017

An extremely controversial topic is the name and/or mascot of certain professional teams. Many North American sports associations have used names and/or mascots that derive from indigenous culture. While many believe this is a way of honouring native culture, others argue that it is offensive and promotes harmful stereotypes.
What do you think?
Should teams begin to change their names out of respect for the indigenous population?
Explain.

  1. A while ago, I heard a commentator comment on how some fans don't appreciate the Chicago Blackhawks name and logo. I don't remember the reason they gave as to why they don't like it, but I could guess they find this offensive. I understand why they find it offensive, but I don't agree. I don't think the teams are doing this to offend their watchers, just to have an original name and logo from other teams.

    4. Yeah, sometimes people dislike it because other people do.

  2. Not too long ago, my grandpa was explaining some of the hockey team symbols, I actually found it very interesting and learnt a lot. But, I find it funny that now I get asked about it. I think that some of the team names and symbols aren't bad, but I do think that they are interesting such as the black hawks. The black hawks is actually my favorite symbol and I understand why people would find it offensive, but I also I think that it could honer other people.

  3. I've never really cared about the logos of football teams before, but then again I've never cared much about football. I don't think that the people who made those logos were intending to be racist or stereotypical. I believe that they thought it would be a unique name. I don't believe that they were promoting indigenous tribes or that they were insulting them.

  4. I dont think that the people who came up with the names were trying to be racist or offensive or anything, I just think that they were trying to honor people from that place and that they were trying to be original. Personally, Ive never really been a fan of football or any other sport for that matter. I really only like hockey and soccer.

  5. Using the name of a indigenous culture inst racist at all. the owners of the franchises who chose the names chose them if anything as a way to honor the culture and not be offensive. They were not trying to offend anyone in anyway. Although most mascots are made to be appealing and somewhat funny. so if a team makes a mascot that is related to the culture and is made in a weird way that can be offensive. but i'm sure its no ones intention to offend anyone.

  6. I don't believe using the name of an indigenous tribe is offensive. It is used to honour the tribes and our heritage. It is not made to insult or offend them in anyway. Some native people can take it offensively as it is their tribe and the mascots could be somewhat mocking their society and past.

  7. I don’t think that sports teams should be concerned about changing their team names because they are “offensive” to Native cultures. I don’t think that it’s offensive at all and I think it’s a nice way to honor the Native culture. I don’t think that when people cheer for a team and go to watch sports they really focus on the team name and what it’s related to. Personally, I don’t see a problem with team names related to Native cultures at all.

  8. I don’t think that teams should start changing their names. It is not as if they are saying rude things about a culture, they are just naming their team after the people who used to live in that area. I don’t think that it’s offensive or that the intention of the logos were to be offensive. I find that it is a creative way to remember other cultures that came before us.

  9. i think that its controversial because it could be seen as offensive to so many people but that the same time it can be seen as representing their culture. i, however, think that representing all the indians like this using one symbol is a little ridiculous. i can understand why theyre upset, and they should chamge the logo

  10. I have never found the use of native american names or symbols for sports teams or mascots offensive. Athletes are proud to wear their team's jersey. I think that it shows respect to the indigenous people that we are representing different teams with their culture. I believe that it would be extremely disrespectful for us to change those team names because it would make us look like we are not okay with referring us to our people as indigenous people. Until this becomes a serious issue and the native americans begin to really take offence to it, I don't think that there is a reason to change the names.

  11. I'm not too big on watching sports, but both my dad and brother watch a lot, and whenever I see sports names or logos like the Chicago Blackhawks, I don't really mind. I honestly don't think that they are doing it on purpose. Even if they are, it is not the end of the world. I think it's simply meant to represent the a native culture, and the only reason they should change the logo is if the culture they are representing is not okay with the name.

  12. I don't think its a big deal or a problem of having native names for sport teams. I think they either chose their name to honor the natives or thought it was a good name for their team. If the group they name their team after have a problem they can always deal with it them selves. Also I don't think anyone who was involved in the naming of these sport teams intended to offend any groups of people.

  13. No, I do not believe the usage of native american tribes as a logo or as a name for a sports team is offensive. The groups of people that go against the teams take it too far and need to loosen up a bit. The sports teams do not mean to offend anyone because sports are a big thing nationwide and not a big joke. Sports are meant to be spent having fun playing or watching, not getting hated on for stupid reasons.

  14. I do not think anyone is offended when they hear chicago blackhawks. Hockey has been going arond for a long time and name slike thta were normal back then. What I would suggest is that if you`re making a new team don`t make it racist but let the old ones stay. The people on the team ain`t racist so that`s not a problem. They don`t need to change the logo or name because it`s not ruining a culture. You don`t look at a hockey team and think that it`s a place full of racist people.

  15. Personally I think having teams named Blackhawks and Redskins aren’t that bad. It’s the same if a team is called the Cowboys (which does exist). People that get offended by these sports teams names is stupid because anything it’s representing natives not somehow offending/making fun of natives. Calling a team a native name should be like calling a team by any other kind of people such as the cowboys, patriots etc.

  16. I do not think that these sports teams have chosen these names or logos to insult or offend people. Maybe some people are offended and bothered by it, but i certainly dont think that was the intention. I think tat these teams have some way paid a tribute to these native american tribes and are honoring them. I'm not against this, as part native american, I'm not offended and I
    completely support this.

  17. I do not think it is bad to have native names for sports teams. The people who come up with the names for the team do not intend to offend people. Teams should not start changing the names of their teams because it COULD be honoring the native culture and if someone does not like that they should not have to change their team name just because a few people get offended and their intentions were not to offend anyone.

  18. people took time to make them and they made them to suit people who are on the team and make them proud. changing name isn't easy. If you want to really change it's name, why don't you change the name yourself? Why don't you try to give them a name that does not offend them or anyone? It's literally impossible. If you make a random name, you will be criticized for making fun of the team. If you name it after some people, they also might get offended, it's almost impossible.

  19. I don't really follow sports so I never really thought too much about this topic. But i think that having native names or having native american tribe logos for sports teams isn’t offensive at all. i think it's simply honouring and remembering the natives and their culture. But i can see why people would think it’s offensive because it could be shown as mocking the native culture especially with the mascots which could be very offensive to many tribes.

  20. i am all for changing the name of their team. there's no way that these names were made out of respect and honor because they were made a long time ago when these stereotypes were a big issue in society. they are still an issue and offending to those who come from these cultures. i truly believe they should change the name and even more so for the redskins because that name is just preposterous and completely offensive

  21. I don't find these logos offensive. They're not graphic images that disrespect Natives. Most of the time, people who complain about culture appropriation aren't even the ones being appropriated, they just feel the need to get mad. Then again, that is my opinion, and I've never had to deal with racism before. This decision should be made by Natives only, not people who felt the need to be offended.

  22. No I don't think these are offensive or anything. Unless it's showing something in like a sacred book or something private/graphical then it's fine. I don't believe this is promoting any racism or stereotypes about native people, but i just see it as a trademark of a team. I don't see anything like this having a negative impact on anybody unless it clearly shows something against redskins.

  23. I have a great respect for the aboriginal culture. They lived here long before us without much war between themselves and a way of life not even a perfect man today could follow with such virtue. The Europeans came took all they had, manipulated their generosity and took advantage. Not only did we steal their land, their dignity but also their name. This is not just something that can be deemed acceptable to say just because it’s sanctioned by the NFL. I am not Native American, but the use of this offensive name brings back the suffering this society has endured way too much of, and it is absolutely saddening. These teams should change their names not only to keep up with the times, but also to try and make up for the hundreds of years of oppression and social genocide we put them through.

  24. I absolutely agree to this decision because the United States should focus on being respectful towards other culture, especially to the people that had their rightful land taken away form them to replace them by the pure people of america. "I wish that we would treat each other like brothers and sisters" a very bright African american once said.
