In the memoir The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, Jeannette is CALLED out by her teacher.

The teacher claims that people do not choose to be homeless, but become homeless because of other factors (drugs, alcohol, social services, etc.)

What do you think?
Can people choose to be homeless?

MEANWHILE, Father Emmett "Pops" Johns, who founded Dans La Rue passed away a few months ago.  He was the driving force behind helping the homeless with shelter and food.

What do you think of this great Montreal man?

  1. i dont think anyone chosses to live on the streets because it is a very hard life to live. not having shelter for a rainy day. not have heating for a cold night. and not having the comfort of a bed arent things anyone wants. although unless you are like jeannettes parents the that is a different story. if you are able to live such a life and be happy and is something you want to do then go for it. although not many people know what its like to be homeless and spend your days begging for food or money.

  3. I believe that is it absolutely possible for someone to choose to be homeless, just very very unlikely. Most people would rather have a roof above their head and food to feed themselves, but I believe that it is possible for people to choose this life. They might want to try as an adventure or challenge. Personally, if I had the choice, I would definitely choose to own a property to live in and supply myself with enough food to survive. I think everyone else would! I do not know anything about this man "Father Emmett 'Pops' John", but judging by the fact that he looks to help the homeless, I believe that he is a great man. He obviously really cares about the people's lives on the street and I really respect that.

  4. Poor people have been around for as long as we have had a system of an economy. But I believe that poor people are poor because of drug abuse and lack to create economic opportunities. Everyone has their stories to tell and they're all different in their own way. But it is possible for people to become homeless as an experiment or other reasons. Rex and Rose became homeless because they wanted it to be an adventure. For Father Emmett, I never knew the man or never even heard of him but it sounds like what he did was very generous and that he tried to fix peoples lives. It's a shame that he died but as Stalin once said, "One death is tragic, a million is a statistic" .

    1. Even after finishing the Glass Castle, I can still not understand why Rex and Rose-Mary didn't decide to get off their asses and do something with their lives. After all, Rose-Mary was sitting on $1,000,000, it wouldn't have been very hard to get a move on with their lives...

    2. I disagree, I don't think it's because they "they lack to create economic opportunities", it's a matter of circumstance, I think that they are more concerned with not freezing to death or being run over in the night by cars. I understand your point that some are left on the street by drug abuse, but I don't think Stalin is the appropriate choice for a quote here, not sure how his legacy of brutality relates to the point you're trying to make.

    3. I don't understand why they chose to be homeless either.

    4. This blog is horrifying. I’m going to cry myself for the next week and a half. Are you seriously saying that the HOLOCAUST was a statistic? Your quote is absolutely unacceptable and unforgivable. Just kidding. It was just completely irrelevant to what you were saying and the topic of the blog. Why would you say that🤣🤣

  5. I don’t really think it’s possible to say that nobody wants to live on the streets, but since there are so many people that are homeless, it’s impossible to say that nobody wants to live there. My guess is that most if not all do not want to be living on the streets, and I’m sure we can all understand. None of us would cope well without all the stuff that we have. I do believe that homelessness can be caused by bad habits, and in a way, that does make being homeless your choice. After all, spending all your money and drugs and alcohol is your choice. So in a way, if people do go and blow all their money on cosmetics or substances, then yes, they are kind of choosing to become homeless. About Pops, I actually met him once or twice. My mom knew him pretty well and took care of him at the residence that he was staying at. In fact, it was supposed to be kept secret . I’m not sure why, my mom never explained it to me, but then there was this one dude who worked with my mom who made it public that he worked there, and interviewers started to pile in. I guess that's why it was secret. I think that Pops was a great guy. He was so selfless, and to think of how many people he must have saved is crazy, and honestly pretty cool. He did a great thing and I don’t think that anyone could ever thank him enough.

  6. I think that homelessness is a very touchy topic because there is just so much of it and the reasons can change all around. I think a majority of people like to be homeless in a sense because there are just so many job opportunities out there and for people to be begging on the street is kind of ridiculous. but, on the other hand, theres homelessness of people with disabilities and whom cannot work. these people are the type of people that sometimes get forgotten. they aren't homeless because they wanna be lazy, but because they can't have any other lifestyle. I think that no matter the reason, even person deserves to eat and deserves a home. this man was truly an amazing guy who had a kind heart.

  7. Clearly people can choose to be homeless because Jeannette's parents do that. But, before reading this book I never thought that someone would choose to be homeless. I never assumed that when I saw a homeless person they were on the streets because of alcohol, drugs etc. But, there is a majority of people that live on the streets that are homeless because of alcohol, drugs etc.

  8. Oh my god that annoyed me so much when the teacher said that like shut up Carol! I’m pretty sure Jeanette would know exactly what it’s like. I don’t think that people choose to be homeless. If you grew up in an extremely wealthy family and then messed up your life and ended up homeless then yeah it’s kind of their “choice”. And what I mean by choice is that it’s their fault. But for people growing up in an extremely poor family like Jeannette I then it’s very likely that they would but they could’ve had ended up being homeless just like their parents and grown-up on the streets just like Rex and Rosemary. Imagine being homeless in a place like New York City where one apartment costs a fortune per night! It would be very hard to get a home in a place like that. ButI don’t think anyone really wants to be homeless. It did shock me how Rosemary could have sold the land and gotten out of that situation but chose not to. That’s an example of how it is a choice But that’s a whole different thing. Anyways I don’t think that being homeless is a choice in most cases and I feel awful for people that live on the streets. Nobody deserves that.

  9. I mean, I did not really think about it until today but yeah, I guess you can choose to be homeless if you wanted to. And perfect proof right here are Jeanette's parents. Although it probably is not the most common and or healthiest of things it is possible. I think that Rosemary and Rex were just too good at seeing the good side in things eh?

    1. Very true. Rose Mary owns land worth $1,000,000 but lives on the streets! That's her choice.

  10. I think that you can/can;t choose to be homeless. I think you CAN choose because you might want to live out on the streets rather than a house. But you CAN'T choose to be homeless because of, as mentioned above, drugs, alcohol, etc. Jeannette's parents wanted to be homeless and refused the ideas Jeannette and her siblings had to help their parents. Sometimes, the choices that Rose-Mary and Rex Walls make confuse me. But it's okay because it's their choice, it's their life.

  11. I think that ya some people do choose to be homeless. It's obviously not the case most of the time, but it can be sometimes. At first, Rose Mary and Rex Walls do at some point decide to be homeless, not because of the drugs and alcohol and stuff like the teacher was saying, but because Jeannette offered them some help, BUT she refused help financially and stuff like that. We saw that in the very first section, when she went out for lunch with her mom in New York. I think that the guy who started Dans La Rue was a great guy. It's great that he helped others out.

  12. I believe that people don’t choose to be homeless and they do become homeless because of certain factors. No one dreams of being homeless. Things such as alcohol and drugs take over and destroy people's lives. There are some cases where people choose to be homeless and when many are offered help, they refuse because they are “okay” with their lifestyle. Father Emmett "Pops" Johns sounds like a wonderful man. I think that he deserves to be recognized for his work. Hopefully more people follow in his footsteps and help the people on the streets.

  13. 1. I think she's wrong, some people are there cause they don't have much option. But I'm pretty sure they can get tips by holding doors rather than sitting around asking. I know a lot of people don't donate because they think they are corrupt and going to spend money otherwise.

    2. Yea people can choose to be homeless I mean I don't see why anyone would want to but if they want to they can. Just don't pay ur taxes, foreclose ur home and u done now

  14. I believe that in some cases, homelessness can be a voluntary decision, like Rosemary and Rex, but even so, it should not be assumed all people on the street are there because they want to be. Things happen, you get desperate and life moves forward but you can't catch up. You end up on the street but with help from things like "Dans la Rue", you can rebuild your life. It's a shame that he has passed away, but he filled his life in a very fulfilling way, helping others.

  15. I think that's there are many aspects of being homeless. I think it can be a choice if you want it to be. But then again there are those who are on the streets because of drugs and alcohol. I think its ok to be homeless by choice everyone lives their life how they want to. I think what the founder of dans les rues did was great. i've heard of him before and think he will be greatly missed.

  16. Personally, I think that there are many factors that can cause homelessness. It can be voluntary and just a way of life for some people but it can also be cause by not having enough money to support yourself. Meanwhile, I definitely admire Father Emmette “Pops” John who founded Dans La Rue. I admire his ability to see the good in people and not just jump to conclusions that just because you have a bad background you’re a bad person.

  17. I always feel conflicted when I see homeless people on the street. I want to help them, but I'm not sure if they will just go and buy drugs and alcohol with the money. Some people say that is rarely the case, but I know for sure that this is more common than most people would think. Now I give homeless people food. I think maybe in rare cases someone can choose to be homeless but I would never understand why. I love what Father Emmette "Pops" John did, because he helped so many people improve their lifestyle.

  18. yes people can chose to be homeless, but I'm sure that most of them where unwillingly thrown to the street in the first place. The man that once provided shelter for the homeless is a great guy. He must've needed a lot of money since you need enough fund to support the shelter so it doesn't go bankrupt. It's also helpful in time such as in winter. He's a great guy because he's a person with pity on the people around him.

  19. There are people who choose to be homeless. Take Jeanette's parents for example but that doesn't go for everyone. Some people who just got really unlucky in their life ended up lining on the street. A majority of people who are homeless do a lot of drugs and that is a fact but there are people who don't. people like Father Emmette "Pops" John are people we need more of in this world. people who risk their lives to make others better

  20. I don’t think people decide to be homeless. Most of the time, it’s when people have no other choice than to live on the streets. But there are some people who choose to stay in that lifestyle because they want to be free of the pressures of working and paying bills. For some people , they see it as a free way of life, where you could do whatever you want. I personally don’t understand why people think that, but whatever floats their boat...

  21. I think no one chooses to be homeless. I don’t think that there is anyone who thinks that they want to live their lives sleeping on park benches, hungry and cold in clothes that they found laying around. I do think though that many homeless people accept their lives how they are and will look at it positively-ish like jeannette’s mom. I think people who are homeless will always want to get money and do have the hopes and dreams to get out of being homeless but i think they have a problem with what they do with the money they receive. Because obviously if they knew how to spend their money then they wouldn’t be homeless in the first place. I think people like Father Emmett “pops” johns who help the homeless with shelter and food are doing good things but they cant just be building homes and giving out free food to these people, they need to educate them and teach them to try and get a job so then they can afford things and use their money for food and stuff, not things like drugs and alcohol.

  22. i don't think you can choose to be homeless. i mean you can but it would just be a not very smart thing to do if you can easily afford a place to live. for Jeanette's parents they had jobs but just thought they would be happier without them and they didn't choose to be homeless but they were happier without jobs.

  23. There could always be people who c̢͞͠h͏o͢o̕s̢̛e͟ to be homeless, but the majority of the time, it's just the outcome of unfortunate events from their past. Once they've become homeless however, it's usually not their choice and they're looked down upon by everyone else. I've never spoken about Father Emmett "Pops" Johns, but that doesn't mean I can't tell how much of an amazing and caring man he was. Rip.

  24. I mean you can try to be homeless by travelling with no home to sleep in. When you go camping in tents, it's practically homeless. But usually if you are homeless, you have drinkong problems, or drug addiction, or you can not pay you bills because you have no job. I guess you kind of do choose to be homeless. Because one can choose to be rich by working really hard and one decides that they won't so they become lazy and they don't want to do anything. This is why I really like the movie "The persuit to happiness" because even if the dad was really poor, he slowly worked his way up and up and eventually made it to a point where he was happy and was able to give a future for his son.
